Moving made easy: your guide to stress-free relocation

A step-by-step checklist to plan your move, stay organized, and avoid last-minute chaos.

The simple rule that makes moving easier

Most moving stress comes from two things: uncertainty and last-minute decisions. Your goal is to turn your move into small, repeatable steps—spread out over a few weeks.

Your 3-part moving plan

  1. Decide early (dates, budget, what you’re taking)
  2. Book the right help (movers, truck, storage)
  3. Pack with a system (labels, priority boxes, essentials)

8 weeks before moving day

  • Pick your moving date (or a date range if flexible).
  • Get 2–4 quotes and compare what’s included (hourly vs flat rate, fuel, stairs, long carry, etc.).
  • Start decluttering: donate, sell, recycle. The less you move, the less you pay.
  • Create a move folder (digital or paper): quotes, receipts, inventory, building rules.

4 weeks before

  • Book your mover (or truck/container) and confirm details in writing.
  • Order supplies: boxes, tape, labels, mattress bags, bubble wrap/paper.
  • Measure large furniture and note tight spaces (stairs, elevators, door frames).
  • Notify key contacts (work, school, childcare) about your moving window.

2 weeks before

  • Start packing non-essentials (seasonal items, books, décor).
  • Label by room + priority: “Kitchen – Open First”, “Storage”, “Fragile”.
  • Confirm building logistics: elevator booking, loading zone, parking permits.
  • Plan utilities: internet, electricity, gas, water—schedule start/stop dates.

1 week before

  • Pack an essentials box: toilet paper, soap, chargers, meds, snacks, paper towels, basic tools.
  • Set aside valuables: documents, jewelry, keys—keep these with you, not on the truck.
  • Do a final confirmation with movers: arrival time, address, phone numbers, payment method.
  • Take photos of high-value items (condition documentation helps if anything happens).

Moving day

  • Keep the essentials box accessible (your car is best).
  • Do a quick walkthrough before the truck leaves: closets, drawers, balcony, storage locker.
  • Direct the unload using room labels and a simple “box map” (which rooms are which).
  • Check inventory if you have a list—especially for long distance moves.

First 48 hours after

  • Unpack by function: bathroom → beds → kitchen basics → clothing.
  • Break down boxes as you go to keep the space calm.
  • Update your address (banks, CRA, subscriptions, driver’s license, etc.).
